Swedish House Mafia were three solo DJs who were bigger together. Between 2010 and 2012, Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso took Stockholm’s progressive house sound into arenas and the pop charts. Then they quit at the top — and came back five years later.
Three DJs from Stockholm
Axwell was born on 18 December 1977, Steve Angello on 22 November 1982 and Sebastian Ingrosso on 20 April 1983. The name was first used officially in March 2007, at the Winter Music Conference, and the group formed properly in late 2008. Eric Prydz was linked to the project early on but chose not to join, and announced his exit in November 2008. Ingrosso’s own career has its own story: read about Sebastian Ingrosso.
One, Miami 2 Ibiza and Save the World
The first single, “One”, appeared on Beatport on 2 May 2010 and reached No. 7 in the UK; the vocal version, “One (Your Name)”, featured Pharrell Williams. “Miami 2 Ibiza”, with Tinie Tempah, followed that October and reached No. 4. The compilation Until One gathered their work that year and went gold in the UK, and the documentary Take One followed them through 253 gigs in 15 countries.
In May 2011 came “Save the World”, sung by John Martin: No. 10 in the UK, No. 4 in Sweden. DJ Mag placed them No. 10 in its 2011 Top 100 DJs poll.
Don’t You Worry Child and One Last Tour
On 24 June 2012 the trio announced they would split. Their biggest hit came after that. “Don’t You Worry Child”, again with John Martin, was released on 14 September 2012 and went to No. 1 in the UK, Sweden and Australia. The compilation Until Now, released on 22 October 2012, reached No. 14 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum in the UK and Sweden.
One Last Tour ran from November 2012 to March 2013, including three sold-out nights at Stockholm’s Friends Arena that drew more than 100,000 people. The last show was at Ultra Music Festival in Miami on 24 March 2013. The documentary Leave the World Behind premiered at SXSW a year later.
Reunion and Paradise Again
Five years later, on 25 March 2018, they closed Ultra Miami with a surprise reunion set. The Save the World Reunion Tour followed in 2019. The singles “Lifetime” (with Ty Dolla Sign and 070 Shake, July 2021), “It Gets Better” and “Moth to a Flame” with The Weeknd (October 2021) led to their first studio album, Paradise Again, on 15 April 2022. It reached No. 1 on the UK Dance Albums chart and on Billboard’s Top Dance/Electronic Albums. Shortly after, they co-headlined Coachella with The Weeknd, then took the Paradise Again World Tour on the road; “Redlight”, with Sting, followed in 2022. In 2024 “Lioness”, with Niki & the Dove, put them back in the Swedish charts.
