In short

  • Single by French DJ and producer Bob Sinclar (Christophe Le Friant).
  • Released in the UK by Defected: No. 9 on the singles chart and No. 1 on the dance chart in August 2000.
  • Track 2 on his second album, Champs Elysées (October 2000).

Two years after Stardust’s “Music Sounds Better With You”, another Paris house producer reached the UK top ten. Bob Sinclar’s “I Feel for You” entered the singles chart at No. 9 in August 2000 and topped the UK Dance Chart the same week. It also opened the way for his second album, Champs Elysées.

Who is Bob Sinclar?

Bob Sinclar is Christophe Le Friant, born in Paris on 10 May 1969. In the 1980s he DJed as Chris the French Kiss, and he worked under project names such as The Mighty Bop and Reminiscence Quartet. In 1998 he took the name Bob Sinclar, after a character in the 1973 film Le Magnifique, and released his first album under it, Paradise. He owns the label Yellow Productions.

The single

Defected released “I Feel for You” in the UK. It entered the Official Singles Chart at No. 9 on 19 August 2000 and spent five weeks in the top 75, slipping to 20, 33, 49 and 63. The same week it was No. 1 on the UK Dance Singles Chart. In Europe it ranked No. 75 on Music & Media’s 2000 year-end Border Breakers chart, which tracked airplay for artists signed outside their home country.

Champs Elysées

The album followed on 7 October 2000 on Yellow Productions and Defected. Recorded in 1999–2000 and produced by Sinclar alone, it opens with “Champs Elysées Theme” and “I Feel for You”, and features James “D-Train” Williams on “Got to Be Free” and “Darlin’”, Chezere and Ken Norris on “Life”, and Gene Van Buren on “Freedom”. French CD and digital editions add a 7:14 “Bob’s Disco Remix” of “I Feel for You”. The album reached No. 28 in France and No. 148 in the UK.

Reviews were mixed. NME’s Piers Martin heard a “predictable whirl of artificial strings, filtered loops and strident glitterball house”, while AllMusic’s John Bush gave it three stars out of five.

What came next

Albums followed with III (2003) and Western Dream (2006), and Sinclar moved toward big vocal anthems: “Love Generation” (2005), “World, Hold On” (2006) and “Together” with Steve Edwards. For the bigger picture, read our history of French electronic dance music.
