Chuck Love brings a band musician’s habits to deep house. The Minneapolis producer sings, plays several instruments and performs a live DJ and video set; on record, his catalogue runs from Vino and Salted to Om Records and his own label, Love Network.
Minneapolis beginnings
Chuck Love, born Charles Erickson, makes soulful, jazzy house shaped by his Minneapolis roots. His first 12-inch, “Take Me” / “Close Enough”, came out on Vino Recordings in 2004, with remixes by Jask and Monte Hilleman. In March 2005 Salted Music released the Frozen in Minneapolis EP: three tracks written, produced and arranged by Love, with saxophone by Brian Gallagher and Peter Vircks, recorded and mixed in Minneapolis.
The Om Records years
Om Records gave him his widest audience. In 2006 he mixed one of the three discs of OM: Summer Sessions, next to Groove Junkies and DJ Fluid; his disc included a Jimpster remix of his own “Livin’ at Night”, while DJ Fluid’s featured a Claude VonStroke mix. On 18 June 2007 Om released his debut album, Bring Enough to Spill Some: fourteen original tracks, several with the vocalist Fourfeet, plus a bonus DJ mix of his remixes for other artists.
In April 2009 he mixed Get Large Vol. 5 for Large Music.
Love Network and the live show
In 2010 he launched his own label, Love Network. Its first release was “UR Everything”, made with Colette, with remixes by Santiago and Bushido. His music has also come out on Great Lakes Audio, Shifted Music, Onethirty, Celebrity, Lingo and Tango.
On stage he works as DJ, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist in a live DJ/video set, producing parts of tracks on the fly. In the Twin Cities he has played house nights at First Avenue’s venues, including the 7th St Entry and The Record Room.
In the mix
Love’s records are warm and musical — live horns, vocals, swing — and suit the early, deeper part of a night.
