Ross From Friends

A Friends DVD stuck in a studio TV, a father who built sound systems and a live trio: how Felix Clary Weatherall became Ross From Friends on Brainfeeder.

In short

  • British producer and DJ Felix Clary Weatherall, born in June 1993 and raised in Brightlingsea, Essex.
  • Broke through in 2015 with “(Talk to Me) You’ll Understand”, after early EPs on Magicwire and Lobster Theremin.
  • Signed to Brainfeeder for Family Portrait (2018) and Tread (2021); performs live as a trio.

Ross From Friends is the alias of Felix Clary Weatherall, an Essex producer who turned a joke name into a live act playing Glastonbury, Coachella and Sónar. His music moves between house, dub techno and vaporwave textures, and since 2018 it has come out on Brainfeeder.

Raves on a bus, a DVD in the TV

Weatherall was born in June 1993 and grew up in Brightlingsea, near Colchester. Dance music ran in the family. His father designed sound systems for live shows and played Hi-NRG and early techno at squat parties, and in 1990 his parents held raves on a bus travelling around Europe, powered by his father’s homemade system. Footage from his mother’s archive of those trips later became the video for his single “Pale Blue Dot”.

The name came in 2012. A TV in his studio had a Friends DVD stuck inside and would play nothing else. In 2018 Mixmag ran an April Fool claiming David Schwimmer was suing him; it was a joke.

Small labels and a breakthrough

His first records came out on small UK labels, Magicwire and Lobster Theremin: the David Crane’s Amazing Tennis EP in 2013, then Alex Brown and You’ll Understand in 2015. The breakthrough was “(Talk to Me) You’ll Understand” (2015), which XLR8R described as a “hazy lo-fi number”. Critics started to file him under lo-fi. Weatherall has rejected the term because of its connotations.

The Brainfeeder albums

He then signed to Brainfeeder. His debut album, Family Portrait, came out in July 2018; Mixmag heard hip hop, Japanese boogie and house in it. The three-track Epiphany EP followed in August 2019, and the second album, Tread, in October 2021.

A live trio and a new label

On stage, Ross From Friends is a band: Weatherall with Jed Hampson and John Dunk, combining saxophone and keys with beats and basslines run from Ableton. That set-up has played Glastonbury, Coachella, the Roundhouse and Sónar. Since 2024 he has also released music on his own label, Scarlet Tiger, including the Bubble Love album in December 2024 and the single “Lying in the Sand” in April 2025.
