Steffen Berkhahn from Anklam: Berlin club DJ since the early 1990s, co-founder of Innervisions with Âme, and RA’s No. 1 DJ four years running.

In short

  • German DJ born Steffen Berkhahn in Anklam on 21 December 1975, based in Berlin.
  • Co-founded Innervisions in 2005 with Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann of Âme.
  • Voted No. 1 in Resident Advisor’s Top 100 DJs poll every year from 2013 to 2016.

Dixon became the most-voted DJ of the 2010s without a chart hit to his name. His reputation rests on selection, long sets and Innervisions, the Berlin label he runs with Âme.

Berlin in the early 1990s

Born in Anklam, in what was then East Germany, Steffen Berkhahn began DJing as Dixon in the early 1990s in Berlin clubs including Turbine, Tresor, E-Werk and WMF. At WMF he held a weekly residency with Mitja Prinz for several years. His first mix CDs were the Off Limits series (1999, 2000 and 2002) and Audio Video Disco with Prinz, released by WMF Records in 2001.

From Sonar Kollektiv to Innervisions

He moved into label and A&R work at Recreation Recordings, a sub-label of Berlin’s Sonar Kollektiv. In 2005 he co-founded Innervisions with Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann, the duo behind Âme and the club hit “Rej”. Innervisions started as a Sonar Kollektiv sub-label and became independent in 2006.

His mixes from those years trace the sound. Body Language Vol. 4 (2007) came out on Get Physical, the label of Booka Shade. Temporary Secretary (2009) was released on Innervisions, The Grandfather Paradox with Henrik Schwarz and Âme (2009) on BBE, and Live at Robert Johnson Volume 8 in 2011. Five Years of Innervisions, with Air, followed in 2010.

Four years at the top

Resident Advisor’s readers voted him No. 1 in their Top 100 DJs poll in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Outside the booth, he co-founded the clothing brand Together We Dance Alone in 2017, and in 2018 he was added to Grand Theft Auto Online as a nightclub DJ.

Transmoderna

In summer 2019 he launched Transmoderna, a Friday residency at Pacha in Ibiza that ran for 20 weeks from May to October. A second season was confirmed for 2020 at DC10. For the label side of the story, start with Âme, the duo he built Innervisions with.
