Honey Dijon

Chicago house taught her, New York and Berlin made her: Honey Dijon’s path from the South Side to a Panorama Bar residency, fashion runways and a Grammy.

In short

  • American DJ and producer, born Honey Redmond in Chicago in 1968.
  • Mentored in Chicago by Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and Greenskeepers; moved to New York in the late 1990s.
  • Albums on Classic Music; Grammy in 2023 for her work on Beyoncé’s Renaissance.

Honey Dijon learned house music in the city that invented it. She took it to New York, then to Berlin and the fashion runways — and in 2023 she won a Grammy for her work on Beyoncé’s Renaissance.

Chicago’s South Side

Honey Redmond grew up in the 1970s on Chicago’s South Side, in what she describes as a middle-class, loving African-American family with a strong musical background. Her parents let her go clubbing from her mid-teens, as long as her schoolwork held up. She started DJing in the 1990s, with Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and Greenskeepers as mentors.

New York

In the late 1990s she moved to New York, where she was introduced to Maxi Records and Danny Tenaglia, and played the underground club circuit and fashion shows. She came out publicly as transgender shortly after the move, and has since been a vocal advocate for trans rights and visibility in dance music. In 2017 she led a roundtable at MoMA PS1 on finding safety and creative expression in New York’s club scene.

Records, remixes and Renaissance

She has been producing since around 2000. Classic Music released her compilation Classic Through the Eyes Of: Honey Dijon in 2013, then her debut album, The Best of Both Worlds, in 2017 and Black Girl Magic in 2022. The EPs Xtra (2018) and Slap! (2023) sit between them. Her remix list runs from Madonna, David Bowie, Neneh Cherry, Christine and the Queens and Jessie Ware to SNAP!, Dua Lipa and Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul”. GLAAD nominated her as Outstanding Music Artist in 2018, and nominated Black Girl Magic in 2023.

On Renaissance she is credited on “Cozy”; the album won Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 2023 Grammys and was nominated for Album of the Year. Her DJ-Kicks mix followed in 2024, and the album The Nightlife came out on SOS in 2026.

Panorama Bar and the runway

In Berlin she is a regular at Panorama Bar, the house floor of Berghain, the club where Len Faki holds a residency. On 28 October 2022 she launched a weekly Friday residency there called Jack Your Body — the same title as Steve “Silk” Hurley’s Chicago classic. She called it “a celebration of music without borders”.

Fashion is her other stage. She has soundtracked runway shows for Louis Vuitton and Dior for several years, including collaborations with Dior’s Kim Jones. In 2019 DJ Mag named her Best DJ in its North America awards.

Her sets move between disco, house and techno. For the Chicago roots, keep digging with Marshall Jefferson.
