Lauren Flax
A jungle DJ from Detroit who became Fischerspooner’s tour DJ, released “You’ve Changed” with Sia and formed CREEP in Brooklyn, before turning to analog club music.
- DJ, producer and songwriter from Detroit, active since 1997.
- Fischerspooner’s tour DJ (2008–2011); her 2009 single “You’ve Changed” featured Sia.
- One half of the Brooklyn duo CREEP; later club EPs for DJ Haus’s Dance Trax series and The Bunker New York.
Lauren Flax has spent more than 25 years moving between scenes: Detroit jungle nights, art-pop tours, indie songwriting and, lately, live analog club music. The constant is the dance floor.
Detroit, jungle and the first DEMF
Flax started out in Detroit as a jungle DJ and became a resident at the Motor Lounge, playing Tuesday nights. In 1999 she moved to Chicago to focus on production while still DJing. In 2000 she played the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival, on the Motor stage. By 2002 she had relocated to Manhattan, shortly after her first remix, of Le Tigre’s “Much Finer”.
Fischerspooner, Sia and CREEP
From 2008 to 2011 she was Fischerspooner’s tour DJ, and in 2011 The FADER featured her in its Gen F series. Her first solo single, “You’ve Changed” (2009), featured Sia, who re-recorded the song later that year and made it the first single from her album We Are Born.
With Lauren Dillard she formed CREEP, a Brooklyn duo with a trip-hop streak. Their debut, Echoes, self-released on Creep Intl in 2013, brought in a long list of voices: Sia, Andrew Wyatt of Miike Snow, Tricky, Lou Rhodes of Lamb, Alejandra De La Deheza of School of Seven Bells, Holly Miranda, Planningtorock, Nina Sky and Romy of The xx.
Back to the club
Her remixes grew in parallel: Morningwood’s “Jetsetter” (2003), They Might Be Giants’ “I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar” (2015), Peaches’ “Pickles” and Fischerspooner’s “Top Brazil” (both 2016). In 2018 Jimmy Edgar introduced her to DJ Haus, and she released the It’s Ours EP as Dance Trax Vol. 16.
In 2019 she joined The Bunker New York and released One Man’s House Is Another Woman’s Techno, which reportedly sold out quickly. The same year she remixed “Acid Track” by Phuture and DJ Pierre, and a remix of Pale Blue’s “Breathe” for the Brooklyn label 2MR pushed her towards ambient and acid house. Since then she has toured the US and Europe with live analog sets; 2020 brought the Let It Feel Alright / Power Chord EP with Ghettoblaster, the single “Beat Them” with Dance System, and a remix of Truncate’s “Culture”.
In the mix
