Able to Love — Benny Benassi
The follow-up to “Satisfaction” reused its beat and its vocal duo: how Benny and Alle Benassi built “Able to Love” for the 2003 album Hypnotica.
- Second single by Italian producer Benny Benassi, released in June 2003 on D:Vision.
- Written by Alle Benassi, Benny Benassi and Daniela Galli; produced by the two Benassis with Larry Pignagnoli.
- Built on the main beat of “Satisfaction”; No. 18 in France and No. 5 on Hungary’s dance chart.
After “Satisfaction”, Benny Benassi did not change the formula — he reused it. “Able to Love”, his 2003 follow-up, takes the main beat of his breakthrough and puts new vocals on top. It was the second single from Hypnotica, a pioneering electro house album.
The Benassi workshop
Marco “Benny” Benassi was born in Milan in 1967 and raised in Reggio Emilia. With his cousin Alessandro “Alle” Benassi, he started DJing in the late 1980s; the two later worked as Benassi Bros. In the mid-1990s he joined Larry Pignagnoli’s Off Limits production studio, making music for acts such as Whigfield, J.K. and Ally & Jo. In 2001 he had a first hit as KMC, “I Feel So Fine”, with vocals by Dhany.
After “Satisfaction”
“Satisfaction”, released in Italy in June 2002 and credited to Benny Benassi presents The Biz, brought electro house into the mainstream and later reached No. 2 in the UK. Its voices came from speech synthesisers, and Alle wrote the melody after a tour of Tunisia. The track took more than six months to make; “Able to Love” took just as long. The new single remixes the main beat of “Satisfaction”, with vocals by Paul French and Violeta — The Biz, the duo who also appear in the first “Satisfaction” video.
Release and charts
D:Vision released “Able to Love” in June 2003 to promote Hypnotica, Benassi’s debut solo album. Written by Alle Benassi, Benny Benassi and Daniela Galli and produced by the two cousins with Larry Pignagnoli, the single runs 3:26. It reached No. 18 in France, No. 24 in Wallonia, No. 33 in the Netherlands, No. 51 in Germany and No. 52 in Australia, and No. 5 on Hungary’s Dance Top 40. Hypnotica went on to win a European Border Breakers Award.
In the mix
Five years later, Benassi’s remix of Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise” won the Grammy for Best Remixed Recording at the 50th Grammy Awards. In a set, “Able to Love” bridges early-2000s electro and the electro house boom that followed: try it next to Fedde Le Grand’s “Put Your Hands Up for Detroit” or Boys Noize’s “Jeffer”.
