Duke Dumont and Jax Jones
Duke Dumont is Adam Dyment, a London producer born in 1982 who runs the label Blasé Boys Club. His “Need U (100%)”, with A*M*E, was released on 31 March 2013, topped the UK chart and was nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 56th Grammy Awards. Jax Jones, born Timucin Aluo in London on 25 July 1987, started making beats at 15 on Cubase and came up through London’s open-mic and grime scene. After meeting the grime producer Ripperman at Brixton’s Raw Materials Studio, he worked on releases for Big Narstie and Roadside Gs, and he studied at Brunel University.
Making I Got U
The track was recorded in June 2012, almost two years before release. Dumont and Jones produced it together. Because it interpolates Whitney Houston’s 1998 song “My Love Is Your Love”, Wyclef Jean and Jerry Duplessis share the writing credit with them. The full version runs 4:45.
Release and charts
The single came out first in Belgium, as a download on 13 January 2014, then in the UK on 16 March on Blasé Boys Club and Virgin EMI. It went to No. 1 in the UK and Ireland, topped the UK Dance chart and the US Dance Club Songs chart, and reached No. 10 in Italy. It also reached No. 2 on the Scottish sales chart and No. 14 in Flanders. It was later certified double platinum in the UK and New Zealand, platinum in Germany, Australia, Italy, Sweden and Brazil and gold in the US, and nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 57th Grammy Awards. It also appeared on Dumont’s EP1, released digitally by Virgin EMI on 16 September 2014. His next single, “Ocean Drive”, from the EP Blasé Boys Club Pt. 1, reached No. 42 in the UK in 2015.
The video
Rémy Cayuela directed the video, released on 19 February 2014 and filmed in Thailand: in Bangkok, on the Phi Phi Islands and in Phuket.
After I Got U
Jax Jones went on to a solo career, with “Yeah Yeah Yeah” in 2015 and “House Work” in July 2016. His biggest hit, “You Don’t Know Me” with Raye (2016), reached No. 3 in the UK and borrowed the bass line of “Body Language” by M.A.N.D.Y. vs. Booka Shade — the duo behind “In White Rooms”.
