Patrick Topping
A first trip to Ibiza in 2008, a DC10 residency by 2014: how Newcastle’s Patrick Topping became a tech house headliner and launched his label, Trick.
- Tech house DJ and producer from Newcastle upon Tyne.
- Broke through in 2014 on Jamie Jones’ Hot Creations with “Forget”, Track of the Season at the DJ Awards.
- Founded his own label, Trick, in early 2019.
Patrick Topping went from a first trip to Ibiza to a residency at DC10 in about six years. The Newcastle producer’s 2014 hit “Forget”, on Jamie Jones’ Hot Creations, made his name; four years later the DJ Awards named him Best Tech House DJ.
Newcastle and Motion
Topping first went to Ibiza in 2008. That Christmas he got a set of decks, and the next summer he signed up for Point Blank’s online minimal techno course. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and started making music at 19. Back home he built his experience through Motion, his own party in Newcastle, which led to gigs across the city and a couple of weekly residencies. Sven Väth and Luciano were early influences.
Hot Creations and Paradise
Jamie Jones discovered his productions and brought him to Hot Creations, which released EPs such as Any Amounts, Get Beasty and Boxed Off. Topping made his Ibiza debut at DC10 for Jones’ Paradise party in 2013 and returned as a resident in 2014. Get Beasty (February 2014) topped the Beatport chart. So did “Forget”, the opening track of Boxed Off, which became one of the most Shazamed tracks in Ibiza that summer. At the 2014 DJ Awards he won Best Newcomer DJ and Track of the Season.
The same autumn he released “Voicemail” with Green Velvet, later followed by their When Is Now EP. On 18 April 2015 he recorded an Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1.
Trick and beyond
In early 2019 Topping launched his own label, Trick, with Watch What Ya Doing, followed by records such as Dungeon Freak and Rocket Fuel. In 2022 he and Trick held a nine-week residency at DC10, and that December DJ Mag’s Best of British awards named him DJ of the year. He had already won Best Tech House DJ at the DJ Awards in 2018.
His remixes include Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa’s “One Kiss”, Robyn’s “Ever Again” and Booka Shade’s “Nightfalls”. In October 2020 “New Reality”, made with Hayley Topping, was Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World.
In the mix
Topping’s records are built for long DC10-style sets. Keep digging with Chris Lake.
