Boddhi Satva

Born in Bangui, Boddhi Satva set African music and soul to house tempos and called it Ancestral Soul. His labels, albums and key collaborations.

In short

  • DJ and producer born in Bangui, Central African Republic.
  • Founder of “Ancestral Soul” and head of Offering Recordings since 2007.
  • His album trilogy runs from Invocation (2012) to Manifestation (2022).

Boddhi Satva gave his music its own name. Ancestral Soul, as he calls it, sets African music and soul at house tempo, with spirituality at the centre. Born in Bangui, he has built that sound over two decades through his own label, three albums and collaborations across Africa, Europe and the US.

From Bangui to Ancestral Soul

Boddhi Satva was born in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. He told 5 Magazine that the name Ancestral Soul came to him after a DJ set by Osunlade in 2004. In a 2015 Skiddle interview he described it as “the soundtrack of universal rituals: birth, graduation, marriage, and ancestor-ship.”

Louie Vega was among the first to spot him. Boddhi Satva has run his label, Offering Recordings, since 2007, and his music has also come out on Yellow Productions, Defected, Innervisions, Cadenza, BBE and Vega Records.

Three albums, one cycle

His first album, Invocation, came out in 2012; its title track features Fredy Massamba. He launched it at a listening party in Miami during the Winter Music Conference, where he met Teedra Moses. That year he also recorded “Ngnari Konon” with Oumou Sangaré. The second album, Transition, brought in Les Nubians, Teedra Moses, Omar, Dudley Perkins and Georgia Anne Muldrow. In 2020 Vega Records, Louie Vega’s label, was preparing a reissue of Invocation.

Manifestation closed the cycle on 17 June 2022. It came out on Batakari, the label he launched with BBE Music’s Peter Adarkwah, and features almost thirty guests from the US, South Africa, East and Central Africa and Europe, with artwork by Omar Victor Diop.

Collaborations and remixes

His collaborations reach well beyond house. “Naughty” (2016) brought together Davido and DJ Arafat; “Belma Belma” (2020) features Maalem Hammam; “Kilulu” (2022) features H. Baraka, Kaysha and Spilulu. He has remixed St Germain’s “Sittin’ Here” (2016). During the 2020 lockdown he streamed daily “Quarantine Grooves” sets on Instagram for 50 days.

In the mix

Boddhi Satva’s records are slow-building and vocal-led, made for the deep, ritual end of a night. Keep digging with Rocco Rodamaal and Louie Vega.
