Jack Your Body — Steve “Silk” Hurley
A Chicago radio DJ, a sampled “jack” and a UK No. 1 its producer didn’t know about: the story of the first house record to top the British charts.
- Chicago house track by Steve “Silk” Hurley, released in 1986 on Underground.
- UK No. 1 for two weeks in January 1987, the first house record to top the UK chart.
- The first UK No. 1 to sell most of its copies on 12-inch.
“Jack Your Body” is the record that took house music to the top of the UK chart. Steve “Silk” Hurley made it in Chicago in 1986; in January 1987 it spent two weeks at No. 1 in Britain, while its producer, busy finishing an album, did not even know.
A DJ from WBMX
Steven Hurley was born in Chicago on 9 November 1962. He studied engineering at Lindblom Math & Science Academy and left junior college by 1981 to work on music full-time. In the mid-1980s he became known as a DJ on WBMX’s “Saturday Night Live Ain’t No Jive Dance Party”, mixing with turntablist techniques such as scratching and beat juggling.
His first records came out under the name J.M. Silk: “Music Is the Key” in 1985, then “I Can’t Turn Around”, a cover of an Isaac Hayes disco record sung by Keith Nunnally, which went to No. 1 on the US dance chart in 1986. Hurley later said that Farley “Jackmaster” Funk’s “Love Can’t Turn Around”, a UK top 10 hit that year, was a theft of his production; the two stopped speaking.
The jack
Hurley wrote and produced “Jack Your Body” himself. It is a sparse track built around a sampled “jack” — done “in the old skool way”, as Hardfloor’s Oliver Bondzio put it. Rolling Stone described its “Roland-centered electronic spine”. The single came out in 1986 on the Underground label, and the 3:13 version later appeared on the J.M. Silk album Hold On to Your Dream (1987).
No. 1 by surprise
On the UK chart dated 24 January 1987 it reached No. 1 and stayed there for two weeks: the first house No. 1 in Britain, and the first chart-topper to sell most of its copies on the 12-inch format. It also went to No. 1 in Ireland, No. 9 on the European chart and into the top 20 in the Netherlands, Belgium and West Germany. In the US it peaked at No. 25 on Billboard’s dance club chart.
Hurley never promoted it; he was under pressure to finish the album. When he heard it was No. 1 in the UK, he assumed people meant the dance chart. The single went silver and finished 1987 at No. 38 on the UK year-end chart.
Remixes and legacy
The record kept being remixed: in 1987 with a Monty “House” remix by Simon Harris; in 1992 as “Back to Jack Your Body ’92”, with mixes by Jörg Burger as Burger Industries and The Bionaut; in 2000 as “Jack Your Body 2000”; and in 2009 with a Hardfloor remix. Rolling Stone ranked it No. 1 among the 20 best Chicago house records (2014), The Guardian put it at No. 50 among the 100 greatest UK No. 1s (2020), and Billboard placed it No. 36 among the best house songs of all time (2025).
Hurley went on to remix Madonna, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, CeCe Peniston, Inner City and Black Box, earned four Grammy nominations and made “Cold World” (1989) with Jamie Principle.
In the mix
The 3:13 single edit is short, so most DJs reach for a longer 12-inch mix. Its raw groove sits naturally next to Marshall Jefferson’s “Move Your Body”.
