Not every club hit starts as a lead single. “Together” sat near the end of Bob Sinclar’s 2007 album Soundz of Freedom before US club DJs pushed it to the top of Billboard’s dance chart. By the end of 2008 it was the most played song in American dance clubs.
Bob Sinclar and Steve Edwards
Bob Sinclar is Christophe Le Friant, born in Paris on 10 May 1969 and owner of the label Yellow Productions. He took his stage name in 1998 from a character in the 1973 film Le Magnifique, and his albums run from Paradise (1998) and Champs Elysées (2000) to Western Dream (2006) and Born in 69 (2009). By the mid-2000s he was scoring with big vocal records: “Love Generation” (2005), with Gary “Nesta” Pine, and “World, Hold On (Children of the Sky)” (2006), written and sung by Steve Edwards.
Edwards, a house singer and songwriter from Sheffield active since 1993, sang on many Charles Webster productions in the 1990s, notably “Future Love” by Presence. He also shares credit on Cassius’ “The Sound of Violence”, a No. 1 on Billboard’s dance club chart in 2002.
The album and the single
“Together” is track 13 of 14 on Soundz of Freedom, released on 21 May 2007, with Tommy Boy Entertainment and Ministry of Sound Australia among its labels. The album reached No. 7 in France, No. 10 in Wallonia and Portugal and No. 22 in Flanders and Switzerland. The same era produced “Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now)”, built on C+C Music Factory’s “Gonna Make You Sweat”. “Together” followed as a single in 2008.
Top of the US club chart
In the US, club DJs reporting to Billboard took to it. “Together” reached No. 1 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in the issue dated 15 March 2008. It held the top spot for one week, but finished as No. 1 on Billboard’s 2008 year-end club chart, as the most performed song in dance clubs that year.
In the mix
The formula is simple: a strong vocal, a big chorus and a house beat that leaves room for both. For an earlier Bob Sinclar club hit, read the story of “I Feel for You”; for the wider context, see our history of French electronic dance music.
