Delirious — David Guetta

Tara McDonald on vocals, Joachim Garraud in the studio and a video full of thrown paint: the story of David Guetta’s Delirious, a 2008 single from Pop Life.

In short

  • Fourth single from David Guetta’s third album, Pop Life, released on 31 January 2008.
  • Co-written and sung by English singer Tara McDonald; produced by Guetta, Joachim Garraud and Sven Kirschner.
  • Reached No. 2 in Wallonia and the top 20 in France, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

“Delirious” by David Guetta comes from the years before his biggest global hits, when the Paris DJ was making club records for European radio. Released in January 2008 with Tara McDonald on vocals, it was a top-20 hit in Belgium, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands, and a snapshot of Guetta’s electro house sound in the Pop Life era.

The Pop Life team

Pop Life was Guetta’s third studio album, and “Delirious” was recorded in 2007. Four people wrote it: Guetta, Joachim Garraud, Carl Ryden and Tara McDonald. Guetta, Garraud and Sven Kirschner produced it. Virgin and EMI released it on 31 January 2008 as the album’s fourth single.

Tara McDonald’s vocal

McDonald, an English singer-songwriter, co-wrote the song as well as singing it. The track mixes house and electro house; the album version runs 4:31, the radio edit 3:03. The video put her in the frame too: it was the first Guetta video to feature a credited guest singer.

Remixes and video

The single came with remixes by Fred Rister, Marc Mysterio, Laidback Luke, and Arno Cost with Norman Doray, several of them on the European CD single. Denys Thibaut directed the video in Montreal. It stars Guetta and McDonald, with Kelly Thiebaud as an executive assistant who throws paint around her boss’s office.

Charts

“Delirious” peaked at No. 2 in Wallonia, No. 12 in the Netherlands, No. 16 in France and Switzerland and No. 17 in Flanders, and reached the top 30 in Italy, Austria and Romania. It finished 2008 at No. 36 in the Wallonia year-end chart and No. 69 in France.

Where it fits

Played today, “Delirious” sounds like the bridge between Guetta the club DJ and Guetta the pop producer. The next steps are well known: “Titanium” and “Turn Me On”. For the bigger picture, read the history of French electronic dance music.
