“Sweat” is a remix that outgrew its original. Snoop Dogg’s “Wet” was a modest rap single; David Guetta turned it into a club record and a chart-topper across Europe and Australia in 2011.
The original: “Wet”
“Wet” was the lead single from Doggumentary, Snoop Dogg’s eleventh studio album, released on 17 December 2010. It was written by Calvin Broadus (Snoop Dogg), David Singer-Vine and Niles Hollowell-Dhar, the duo known as The Cataracs, who also produced it at Conway Recording Studios in Hollywood. Snoop’s camp presented it as a song recorded for Prince William’s bachelor party and as a sequel to his 2008 single “Sexual Eruption”. The video, shot at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas, premiered on 5 January 2011.
A first remix, featuring Jim Jones and Shawty Lo, came out on 8 February 2011 as part of Snoop’s “Puff Puff Pass Tuesdays” giveaways. In the US, “Wet” stayed a genre hit: No. 40 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, No. 18 on Rap Songs and No. 13 on Bubbling Under Hot 100.
Guetta’s rebuild
Guetta’s version, credited “Snoop Dogg vs. David Guetta”, came out on 4 March 2011. At 3:16 it is half a minute shorter than the 3:47 original. He produced it with Giorgio Tuinfort and Frédéric Riesterer, and the songwriting credits grew to include Cheri Williams, Derek Jenkins, Dwayne Richardson and Cassio Ware. Priority, Doggystyle, Capitol and EMI released it, and it later appeared on Guetta’s album Nothing but the Beat. A dub remix by Guetta and Afrojack followed on 13 May 2011.
A European and Australian No. 1
The remix did what “Wet” could not. It went to No. 1 in Australia, Snoop Dogg’s third chart-topper there, and to No. 1 in France for two weeks. It also topped the charts in Austria and Belgium’s Wallonia, reached No. 2 in Germany, Switzerland and Flanders, and No. 3 in Ireland and Finland. In the UK it entered at No. 16 and climbed to No. 4, also reaching No. 4 on the UK Dance Chart.
Certifications followed: four times platinum in Australia (280,000 units), platinum in the UK (600,000), Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland and Italy, and three times gold in Germany (450,000).
The video and its restrictions
Two edits of the video exist for “Sweat”, one with extra scenes featuring Guetta. In France, broadcasting authorities restricted both clips over their sexual and violent content: the Guetta version could not be shown before 10 p.m., and the original only after 11 p.m.
In the mix
“Sweat” sits where rap meets four-to-the-floor house: a rap vocal the crowd already knows, on a beat built for a club. It belongs to the same Guetta era as “Turn Me On” with Nicki Minaj and “Titanium”.
