By 2010 Fatal Bazooka had moved from TV sketch to cinema. “Ce matin va être une pure soirée” — roughly, “this morning is going to be a real night out” — was the single that promoted the film Fatal, and it aimed the joke at club pop rather than rap.
A comedy rapper with real hits
Fatal Bazooka is a character created by Michaël Youn. The act began in a 2002 TV show hosted by Youn, Vincent Desagnat and Benjamin Morgaine, and its parodies sold like the real thing: “Fous ta cagoule” (2006), “Mauvaise foi nocturne” with Vitoo and “Parle à ma main” with Yelle (both 2007) all went to No. 1 in France. The album T’As Vu ? (2007) reached No. 4.
A song for a film
Fatal, directed by Youn, opened in French cinemas on 16 June 2010 and drew 1,208,113 admissions in nine weeks. In the story, the rapper Fatal Bazooka loses his crown to Chris Prolls, an electro-pop newcomer played by Stéphane Rousseau, is exposed as a boy from Savoy rather than the ghetto, and goes home to his village to try his hand as a shepherd. Pushed by his mother and his old flame Heidi, he wins his title back in a vocal “Super Clash” against Chris, who ends up fleeing to the bathroom.
The single plays over the end credits. Its featured artists mix real names — Big Ali, PZK and Dogg SoSo — with “DJ Chris Prolls”, the film’s fictional rival. The clip was unveiled in June 2010, as part of the film’s promotion. The film’s score is credited to the producer X-Cell Ent., and its closing song, “Tout au fond de toi”, is by Mickaël Zibi.
Parody by design
Everything about the release points at club culture. The cover parodies “Gettin’ Over You”, the single by David Guetta and Chris Willis featuring Fergie and LMFAO. The video borrows from TTC’s “Dans le klub”, with three clubbers on a suburban bus, and drops jokey references to the iPhone, the BlackBerry and Vivelle Dop.
