Sebastian Ingrosso’s career runs under three names: his own, Swedish House Mafia and Axwell Λ Ingrosso. All three started in Stockholm, and together they helped turn Swedish house into a stadium sound.
Stockholm roots
Ingrosso was born and raised in Stockholm and spent his teenage years in the dance studio of his father, the choreographer Vito Ingrosso. Steve Angello is not a relative but a friend he met at the age of six. His first remix came out in 1999 on Mega Records, and in 2003 he founded his own label, Refune.
Swedish House Mafia
In late 2008 Ingrosso, Angello and Axwell formed Swedish House Mafia. In 2009 he entered DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs at No. 25, the highest new entry that year, and in 2010 he won Best House DJ at the DJ Awards. The group’s album Until One came out in 2010, with “One (Your Name)” featuring Pharrell Williams. “Don’t You Worry Child”, released in September 2012, went to No. 1 in Sweden, Australia and the UK.
In June 2012 the trio announced One Last Tour, and they split after Ultra Music Festival in Miami in 2013. Five years later they reunited at Ultra Miami 2018 for the festival’s 20th anniversary.
Between the two, Ingrosso kept a solo career running. In July 2013 he made his solo debut on the Tomorrowland main stage, and that October he was No. 18 in DJ Mag’s Top 100.
The solo records
Two 2012 releases defined his solo work. “Calling (Lose My Mind)”, made with Alesso and sung by Ryan Tedder, was certified double platinum in Sweden. “Reload”, with Tommy Trash, came out in September 2012 and was later reworked with John Martin’s vocal as “Reload (Take My Hand)”, certified in Sweden and the UK. In 2016 he released “Dark River”, which later appeared on the Axwell Λ Ingrosso album. Later singles include “Dancing Alone” with RØMANS (2018) and, in July 2025, “A New Day”, a remix of Celine Dion’s 2002 single.
Axwell Λ Ingrosso
He and Axwell had already written “Roar” together for the Monsters University soundtrack in 2013. The following year they launched a duo at the Governors Ball festival in New York, alongside the EP X4, and released “Something New” in November 2014.
2015 brought “On My Way”, “Can’t Hold Us Down” and, in June, “Sun Is Shining”, a No. 1 in Sweden; that July they headlined the closing night of Tomorrowland. In 2017 came “I Love You” with Kid Ink, then “Renegade” and “More Than You Know”, and at Tomorrowland that summer Ingrosso played both a solo set on the Refune stage and the main stage with Axwell. The album More Than You Know followed on 8 December 2017. In March 2018 he played Ultra Miami twice, as Axwell Λ Ingrosso and in the Swedish House Mafia reunion, and in August the duo announced a hiatus to focus on the group’s 2019 tour.
In the mix
Most of these records were made for festival main stages rather than small rooms. For the Axwell side of the same story, read about Axwell and Dirty South’s remix of “Sweet Disposition”.
