WhoMadeWho
A Copenhagen trio that set house beats to live guitar, bass and drums in 2003, and two decades later streamed a concert from Abu Simbel for Cercle.
- Danish trio formed in Copenhagen in 2003: Jeppe Kjellberg, Tomas Barfod and Tomas Høffding.
- Early 12-inches on the German label Gomma; nine studio albums between 2005 and 2024.
- Streamed a concert for Cercle from Abu Simbel in Egypt in February 2021.
WhoMadeWho are a band in a scene built on DJs. Since 2003 the Copenhagen trio has played house and electronic music with live instruments — guitar, bass, drums and vocals — and that approach has taken them from small 12-inch releases to Coachella and Abu Simbel.
Copenhagen, 2003
Jeppe Kjellberg sings and plays guitar, Tomas Høffding sings and plays bass, and Tomas Barfod plays drums and produces. From the start the idea was to combine house and electronic music with live instrumentation. Their first 12-inch records came out on the German label Gomma, and early singles such as “Happy Girl” and “Two Covers for Your Party” (2004), “The Loop” (2005) and “Out the Door” (2006) arrived around the self-titled debut album of 2005.
Albums and remixes
The Plot followed in 2009, then Knee Deep (2011), Brighter (2012), Dreams (2014) and Through the Walls (2018). Remixers helped carry the band into DJ booths: DJ Koze reworked “Keep Me in My Plane” in 2009, Tale of Us and Michael Mayer remixed “Every Minute Alone”, and Hot Chip remixed “TV Friend”.
Two live moments show how far the band travelled in those years. In 2007 they headlined the Benicàssim festival when Klaxons arrived too late to perform. In February 2014 they sang “Cuccurucucù” with Arisa at the Sanremo festival, as a tribute to Franco Battiato.
Abu Simbel and the melodic house years
A new phase began with Synchronicity (2020). In February 2021 the trio performed a live-streamed concert for Cercle at Abu Simbel in Egypt, released the same year as Live at Abu Simbel. UUUU followed in 2022, launched with a show at Koko in London, then the single “Miracle” in 2023, remixed by Rüfüs Du Sol, and the album Kiss & Forget in 2024.
The singles kept the remix culture going: “Love Will Save Me” (2024) was remixed by CamelPhat and Marten Lou, “Kiss Me Hard” (2024) by Adam Ten. “Flying Away With You” (2025), with Tripolism, came out on Cercle Records, and “ENERGY” (2026), with Gordo, on Maison Arts.
They played Coachella in 2023 and again in 2026, Estéreo Picnic in 2024, and festivals such as Sónar and Tomorrowland Winter. They also run their own event series, The Moment, in places such as Egypt, Lisbon, Ibiza, Mexico City and São Paulo. Their collaborators include Adriatique, Rampa, RY X and Kölsch.
In the mix
WhoMadeWho records sit where indie songwriting meets melodic house: real voices, patient builds, enough kick drum for a club. For DJs, the remixes are often the way in — start with the Koze version of “Keep Me in My Plane”, then move to the band’s own recent singles.
